The biggest difference is the armament: BMP-2 is fitted with 30 mm autocannon instead of a 73 mm gun and externally mounted AT-5 "Spandrel" ATGM. Introduced in the early 1980's, it is an improved version of BMP-1. BMP-2 stands for Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty 2 (БМП-2, Боевая Машина Пехоты 2), meaning Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).
